Definition
Transgender refers to a person whose gender identity does not match the gender assigned to them at birth. This is an inclusive term that aims to recognize individual diversity in gender identity. The term "transsexual" has been used in the past to diagnose what was once considered a psychiatric disorder. Even though some transgender people may identify with this term, it is considered stigmatizing and inappropriate for use by non-transgender people.
