How to know if you have an STI
Most people who have an STI do not have any symptoms and don't know that they have it. So, the only reason to know if you have an STI is to get testes. For most STIs, a blood test or swab can be enough for a diagnostic. An exam of the genitals may also be done to diagnose certain STIs.
In some situations it is recommended to get tested for STIs:
- if you have symptoms;
- if you want to stop using a condom with a partner;
- after unprotected sex;
- if you have several partners;
- if you recently have a new partner;
- if your partner has an STI;
- if you are planning a pregnancy.
Where and how to get tested
There are several different ways to get tested.
In a laboratory - Mon Test IST (My STI Test)
"Mon Test IST" (My STI Test) is a State programme that allows to test for 4 STIs - Hepatitus B, syphilus, gonorrhoea, and chlamydia - as well as HIV. With this, you can simply go to a laboratory and get tested. You do not need a prescription or appointment. These tests are entirely covered by the Assurance Maladie for people under 26 years old.
In a laboratory - with a prescription
Outside of the Mon Test IST programme, it is also possible to get tested in public or private laboratories, but you need a prescription. The test for HIV can still be done without a prescription.
At a Dans centre gratuit d'information, de dépistage et de diagnostic (CeGIDD) (Free centre for information, testing and diagnostic)
The CeGIDD can test for HIV and Hepatitus B for free, tests for other STIs is often possible.
In the centres de santé sexuelle (CSS) (Sexual health centres)
Also calles "Centre de Planification et d'Éducation Familiale (CPEF)" (Centre for family planning and education), sexual health centres offer free STI tests.
In the centres de protection maternelle et infantile (PMI) (Mother and infant protection centres)
Like the CeGIDD, these centres can offer testing for HIV and Hepatitus B, and sometimes other STIs.
With an at-home kit, free for people 18-25 years old
This is another State programme that allows you to order and receive a free at-home kit for testing by taking your own samples. This is for AFAB people who have an F gender marker. This kit allows to test for 2 STIs, chlamydia and gonorrhoea. This kit can be ordered on the Assurance Maladie's website. After receiving it, the person takes their own samples following the instructions provided and sends them in a postage-payed envelope to a laboratory. The results are communicated by SMS.
